Oracle 10g Automated Shared Server Connection

To configure connection requests for use_dedicated_server=ON using the Oracle Network Manager (netmgr) GUI in the sqlnet.ora file, use the following procedure:

  1. Start Oracle Network Manager (netmgr at the command line).

  2. In the navigator pane, expand Local > Profile.

  3. From the list in the right pane, select General.

  4. Click on the Routing tab.

  5. Select the preferred way that you want connection requests to be routed (shared or dedicated).

  6. Choose File > Save Network Configuration. This writes out the needed parameter to the sqlnet.ora file.

If you set use_dedicated_server to on in the sqlnet.ora file, then existing (server=VALUE) entries in all connect descriptors are overwritten with (server=DEDICATED).

If you want the client to use a dedicated server whenever possible, you can specify (server=DEDICATED) in place of (server=SHARED). When the server parameter is not set, the server configuration defaults to SHARED. However, the client will use a dedicated server if no dispatchers are available, as long as the server is set to remain at its default value, or if you set it to SHARED.
