Oracle 10g Single Sign-On

Centralized authentication allows a single, integrated user sign-on (also known as single sign-on (SSO)). SSO allows users to have access to multiple accounts and applications with a single password, eliminating the need for users to remember multiple passwords. It also simplifies management of user accounts and passwords for system administrators.

The Oracle Advanced Security (only available with Oracle 10g Enterprise) single sign-on authenticates the user once during the initial connection, with strong authentication occurring transparently in subsequent connections to other databases or services. While using single sign-on, users access multiple accounts and applications using a single password. Oracle Advanced Security supports many forms of single sign-on, including Kerberos and CyberSafe.

Oracle Advanced Security also supports SSL-based single sign-on for Oracle users, by integrating with all LDAP v3-compliant directory services. The combination of integrated directory services with Oracle’s PKI enables SSL-based single sign-on to Oracle10i databases. Single sign-on allows users to be authenticated once, with subsequent connections relying on the user’s digital certificate.

This security enhancement provides ease-of-use for users, and provides centralized management to security administrators.

But what are the security aspects of centralized user management?

Security Aspects of Centralizing Security Credentials

The security aspects of utilizing centralized security credentials are both positive and negative. Above and beyond the benefits that result from the centralized management of enterprise users and their associated credentials, there are a number of other security-related benefits and risks that must be looked at.
