Oracle 10g Instantiating with Transportable Tablespace

When you are instantiating database objects for Oracle Streams, and if the objects being instantiated are very large and stored in a self-contained set of tablespaces, then using transportable tablespaces for instantiation is a better method. This is because transporting a tablespace only requires the copying of the data file and integration of the tablespace structural information, instead of reading all the data during export and recreating it on import. Here are the steps:

  1. First, verify the tablespaces being transported are self-contained. Self-contained indicates that there are no references from the objects within the tablespace being transported to the objects residing in other tablespaces not part of the transport.

  2. Then, prepare for instantiation at the source database. Before using transportable tablespaces you must prepare the objects contained in the tablespace set for instantiation. You can perform this step manually by calling one of the following procedures of dbms_capture_adm:

PREPARE_GLOBAL_INSTANTATION
PREPARE_SCHEMA_INSTANTIATION
PREPARE_TABLE_INSTANTIATION

For example, to prepare a sales schema for instantiation, assuming destination site, database link, and propagation are already in place, execute the statement:

EXEC DBMS_CAPTURE_ADM.PREPARE_SCHEMA_INSTANTIATION -
('SALES');

  1. Make the tablespaces being transported read-only.

ALTER TABLESPACE demo_hr READ ONLY;

  1. Export the metadata from the tablespaces at the source database, using transportable tablespace export parameters. Once instantiation preparation is done, export the tablespaces at the source database, using transportable tablespace export parameters. Make sure you specify object_consistent=y when you run the export command.

exp FILE=sales_ts.dmp TRANSPORT_TABLESPACE=y TABLESPACES=SALES TTS_FULL_CHECK=y OBJECT_CONSISTENT=y

  1. Transfer the data files for the tablespaces and the export dump file to the destination database.

  2. Import the export dump file, using transportable tablespace import parameters at the destination database.

imp FILE=sales_ts.dmp TRANSPORT_TABLESPACE=y
TABLESPACES=SALES
