Chapter 2 Introducti

on to Oracle Security

Invoker Rights

We previously saw the program level security where the objects are accessed through the programs that are owned by the same schema owner. When an application user invokes the program, the underlying objects are accessed as if accessed by the owner of the procedure. For instance, in the update_claim_amount procedure, the schema owner is CLAIM_SCHEMA but the application user is Judy. When Judy calls the procedure update_claim_amount, she does not require explicit privileges to update the claim table. Since the procedure and table are owned by CLAIM_SCHEMA, all that is required is for Judy to have execute privileges on the procedure.

Consider another situation: JUDY has a table called claims in her own schema. If she calls the procedure, the table claims owned by CLAIM_SCHEMA is updated, not hers. This is probably normal in most cases. Let's examine several more situations.

Remember Sue, the museum tour guide? While she is winding up her work at the museum, her manager, Mr. Smith, tells her that one of the fuses in the corridor is blown and there are none in stock. He asks her if she could go over to the drug store and get a fuse. Sue agrees, but there is a problem - her car has no gas, and there is no time to fill the car with gas and get the fuse. "No problem", declares Mr. Smith, "just take my car". Wow! Sue is thrilled because Mr. Smith's car is a sports model she has always wanted to drive.
