employ some of the high availability solutions such as Oracle Real Application Clusters (RAC), the next generation of Oracle Parallel Server (OPS), Synchronous Multi-Master Database Replication solutions, or Oracle Data Guard, all of which offer a zero-data-loss setup where the transactions are mined from redo logs and applied to the secondary database.

Sometimes, the recovery requirements are a little relaxed. The last uncommitted transaction may be safe to ignore. Typically, this is the case where the claim information comes in batches and a batch is processed in its entirety, not claim by claim. If the system failure happens during the processing of a batch, the entire batch can be processed again.

However, if the process commits in between, there could be some claims committed inside a batch, creating inconsistency. Some applications, upon encountering a duplicate claim, merely record it as a different "version" of the claim. Since HIPAA requirements mandate that the history of a claim be maintained and that it be auditable, a versioning of some fashion may be feasible and may suffice for the backup protection. But the exact way the error is handled must be recorded.

Next comes another possibility of failure – the physical disks or some parts of them breaking down, a term known as corruption. The HIPAA law requires that data should be backed up in a manner consistent with the application's error handling. Since data is considered a valuable asset, similar to other valuable assets like financial instruments, backup security is a requirement that must be clearly addressed with operational
