Disk I/O Tuning

Chapter 2: Conclusions

There are three basic technologies for disk interfaces, ATA, which is suitable for small desktop systems requiring little I/O bandwidth and only a few drives (usually less than 4), SCSI, which is the factory standard disk interface for almost all production servers due to its relatively high bandwidth and flexibility, and IEEE1394 which shows a lot of promise but hasn't really caught on yet in the server market. In addition to these we have the Fibre Channel technology which can be used to tie multiple SCSI disk chains together and offers large bandwidth.
