Chapter 1 Oracle 10g Grid Computing
Oracle 8i OPS implementation brought in many
significant changes. The significant new feature was the
introduction of Cache Fusion technology; Cache Fusion is a concept
where Cache (or SGA) from the multiple instances coordinate the
buffers (or cache) and manage the database access.
Oracle 8i (OPS) introduced the initial phase of
cache fusion. The data blocks were transferred from the SGA of one
instance to the SGA of another instance without the need to write
the blocks to disk. This was aimed at reducing the ‘ping’ overhead
of data blocks. However, the partial implementation of cache fusion
in Oracle 8i could help only in certain conditions.
With 9i RAC
With full implementation of Cache Fusion
technology, the Oracle 9i RAC achieved a scalable and reliable
parallel database status. RAC has removed many management issues and
simplified installation procedures. Support for the cluster file
system, in addition to the raw devices for the shared disk
structures have simplified the physical storage administration.
Oracle Enterprise Manager has been made cluster aware, and thus
helps to better administer the RAC database .
Oracle 9i RAC has revamped the Oracle Parallel
Server product and the OPS were aptly renamed as Real Application
Cluster, hinting at the true parallel cluster. Table 1.4 summarizes
the changes that occurred and new terminology used for RAC system.
