Chapter 1 Oracle Instance Internals Scripts

For our example database, the results look like the following:

                                                   Wait    Time
File# Data File Name                  Wait Count Time   Count
------ --------------------------------- ------- ------ -------
 67 /data/EXADB/oradata02/dimension.dbf  43,346  114829    2.65
209 /data/EXADB/oradata07/dimension3.dbf 42,950  449439   10.46
158 /data/EXADB/oradata06/dimension2.dbf 40,677  240046    5.90

In the above situation, calculate the standard deviation (I use a cut and paste into Excel and the Excel stdev and avg functions) to determine if the time spent per wait (the last column) is abnormal. In the case of the above files, when the values for the other datafiles are taken into account the average wait is 3.74 centi-seconds, the standard deviation is +/- 5.14 centi-seconds for a range of 0-8.89 centi-seconds per wait. Of the three files in our example, only 209 shows a large deviation from this range. By using our query to find the SGA data buffers used by objects in file 209 we get:
