Chapter 1 Oracle Instance Internals Scripts

Object Name                        Number Num blocks    Touches
------------------------------ ---------- ---------- ----------
DIM_PRODUCT                           209        932     117845
DIM_CUSTOMER                          209       1452      73385
DIM_DAILY_CALENDAR                    209         26         85
DIM_LOCATION                          209          1         73
DIM_FUND_CATEGORY                     209          1         34
DIM_HIST_STOCK_NUMBER                 209          1         28
DIM_OWNER                             209          1         24
MTV_DIM_REPORT_ON_DATE                209          1          3
DIM_HIST_RPTLOC                       209          1          2
DIM_SHIPPING_METHOD                   209          1          2

Given this data, we would examine DIM_PRODUCT and DIM_CUSTOMER to find problems. Further investigation showed that these tables undergo few INSERT or DELETE operations, but do undergo numerous UPDATEs, however, these UPDATE activities rarely actually change data, driving the touch count way up and possibly causing the high wait counts. In addition the process is not doing multiple simultaneous inserts into a single block, but may be doing multiple serial inserts that should not cause freelist or ini_trans contention. The solution in this case is to re-write the application code to only update what is needed.
