Chapter 8 -
Recognizing Identity Theft
An individualís credit report may include debts
they never knew they had.
An individualís credit report shows addresses
where they have not lived.
An individual might miss a credit card or bank
statement that they were expecting.
An individual may see charges on their credit
card bills that they do not recognize.
An individualís financial account balances are
lower than expected and have unexplained withdrawals.
An individual receives a credit denial when
they have not applied for credit.
An individual receives calls from creditors for
accounts they do not have.
Recovering a Stolen Identity
If an individualís identity is stolen, their
credit and possibly criminal history will contain inaccurate
information. No one has a more vested interest in setting those
records straight than that individual does. One could pay someone
else to handle the cleanup operation, but it is likely that the
individual needs to be involved regardless. When searching for
assistance in reclaiming oneís identity, an individual also needs to
be cautious, as there are scam artists that will claim to repair
credit and will do nothing but further victimize that individual.
