Chapter 1 -
The Illusion of Anonymity
Safely Purchasing Online
If the web page is encrypted, then the information
transmitted should be safe from most prying eyes. Because the work
required to decipher the encryption is difficult and time-consuming,
it removes most criminal motivation for routine transactions.
Realize, however, encryption only reveals the security between a
person’s own computer and the server they are using. The data for
most websites and shopping sites is stored in databases. These
databases contain any personal information customers provide
including addresses and credit card numbers. Since employees have
complete access to the information contained therein, the database
may not be as secure at the transaction being used.
Whether shopping online for products or
services, it is critical to use common sense. Although this section
refers to shopping online, the same warnings and guidelines also
apply to online credit applications.
Note - it is extremely important to
evaluate any web page before applying for credit. Every person
should make certain that it is clear with whom they are dealing when
providing personal information requested for a credit application.
When making a significant purchase, it pays to
shop around. This can be done easier online than personally driving
all over town. To make comparison-shopping even easier, there are
online shopping services that act as personal assistants for the
consumer. These services use programs that search the Internet;
gathering information on the desired item, at which sites that item
is available, and at what cost. Because these programs use
different methods to collect information, there are often some
variances in the return results. Therefore, it is in the best
interest of the consumer to try more than one. Rather than simply
going to a few e-commerce or e-tailers sites, a wider Internet
search usually results in a better price.
