Chapter 1 -
The Illusion of Anonymity
This chapter also reviewed many risks brought
upon by lack of Internet privacy, and presented ways to protect
privacy in the future.
Some believe that to worry about trying to be
anonymous or invisible on the Internet is neither possible nor
necessary. They argue that the loss of privacy results in a better
Internet experience and makes online commerce more productive. And
at the opposite end of the spectrum, many worry that privacy may be
nearly impossible to maintain and thus work aggressively to ensure
as much privacy as possible.
Nevertheless, criminals are using the internet
to conduct crime at an ever-increasing rate. In addition to this,
and yet another concern to many users, is the risk associated with
the government having too much information.
There may be times when triple-encrypting and
anonymously re-mailing an invitation to a family reunion may be too
much security. Yet, conducting an important business negotiation
without any consideration to security would be foolish. Security
measures employed should be tailored to the need.
